[Album] Kalafina – Red Moon (2010.03.17)

This is my first time reviewing Kalafina. XDDDDD;; Admittedly, harder than any other I’ve done before.

[Album] Kalafina – Red Moon (2010.03.17)

Red Moon Limited Edition

Red Moon Regular Edition

1. red moon
2. 光の旋律 (Hikari no Senritsu)
4. fantasia
5. 春は黄金の夢の中 (Haru wa Kogane no Yume no Naka)
6. Kyrie
7. 闇の唄 (Yami no Uta)
8. 星の謡 (Hoshi no Utai)
9. storia
10. intermezzo
11. progressive
12. Lacrimosa
13. I have a dream

Let’s start with the titular track, red moon. It has with a beautiful intro, making you imagining you’re inside a dark, mysterious castle. The Kajiuran chants are so haunting!! And then the girls, Wakana as the lonely mistress, Hikaru as the Ojou-sama, and Keiko as the ghost of the castle?? Nevermind. *bricked* Hikaru’s vocal is very powerful in chorus as if she’s raging, and Wakana’s gives out a gloomy/dark aura throughout song. red moon is a very beautiful and strong track as the opening.

Next, Hikari no Senritsu. This song is… weirdly enjoyable. It’s totally disjointed everywhere… but the tunes are nice. It gives out both cheerful and sad feelings. The interesting part in the song in the VEEERY LONG bridge containing flute solo. Else, this song doesn’t stand up after the EPIC red moon.

Okay, let’s practice some belly dance on the next track. 😛 It’s time for TETOTETOMETOME!!! *bricked* Kay, this song is SOOO out of usual Kalafina style. It’s like a combination of Indian and Arabic tunes. Sitar for Indian and the strings for its Arabic aura. AND AND AND… KEIKO AS LEAD VOCAL!!!! *rxcited* On a very rare occasion, Kajiura have Keiko as the lead vocal in this song and Keiko fits it perfectly. Mannn, I can imagine Keiko doing some belly dancing if they make a PV for this song. Or Wakana and Hikaru acting like in those B0llywood movie scenes… running and dancing and singing. 😛 *nosebleeding*

We still can’t take a rest yet. fantasia is the next song. It still has the middle-east aura, mixed with trance-y music. Too bad, the chorus is a bit too generic, kinda like an anime’s theme song. Generally, this song is kinda like Love come down from Kalafina’s first album, Seventh Heaven. I prefer fantasia rather than Love come down, though.

And finally, the first ballad of the album. Haru wa Kogane no Yume no Naka. I gotta admit, I’m not so into ballad (with the exception Seventh Heaven’s titular track, seventh heaven). I found this song a bit boring at first. Not a song that would stand out too much. I love the strings in the song, though. Very beautiful and calm.

Let’s just jump to next track: Kyrie. The live version leaked some time ago in Youtube but soon deleted. Good thing I got to hear it. 😛 It’s a very trance-y song from Yuki Kajiura. The intro reminds me of an old trance track by I’ve Sound’s old trance unit HARD STUFF, Labyrinth in Meditation. It resembles a bit. Next, Kyrie has a small part of Ongaku’s guitar riff. I prefer the live version, though. It was fiercer in the live. This studio version kinda lacks of power, IMO. *bricked* Nevertheless, one of the song that stands out in the album.

After all those songs, we’re dragged to the darkness by Yami no Uta (BGM: Courtesy Waltz). Another song with Keiko as the lead vocal, accompany by Hikaru. This song is…. INTRIGUING. Depends on the mood when you’re listening to this song, you might feel like killing someone, lol. Ah, this is actually an image song of Kajiura’s old work, Courtesy Waltz. Tsubasa from CPMe pointed this out. Yami no Uta was the only song in the album that I liked as soon as I heard it. Very FIERCE. And… yes, it’s like a Waltz of Darkness. You know… Ballroom party… Underworld… xDDDDDDD;;

Next next next!!!! It’s a song with Japanese tunes. Hoshi no Utai. The sound of flute by Rie Akagi throughout the song is sooo brilliant and beautiful. However, this song reminds me of FictionJunction YUUKA‘s Kouya Routen. It has same drum beats, ha! And, oh, according to Hikaru, she feels that in this song, she’s a samurai, Wakana is her wife, and Keiko is the narration. HEY, HIKARUXWAKANA!! xDDDD~ *bricked*

And thus, the story of love, storia began. I can’t say anything anymore. STORIA IS SO FULL OF LOVE, OH MY GOD!!! *bricked* It’s a very beautiful song. TOO BEAUTIFUL!!! *rolls happily* My favorite song of the album, of course.

Now we have some intermezzo. Okay, I skip it A LOT. It has Harlequin, Pocari and Chocolate (and “KISS ME”) in the lyrics, so it’s really intermezzo. Kinda like sapphire and/or gloria for me.

So, we’re being progressive here. This song was like… a breakthrough song. It even has “dancing” Kalafina in the PV. 😛 A very energetic song. On some points, it sounds like something FictionJunction YUUKA would sing. Not a very original concept from Kajiura, it is. I love it, though. Kalafina is really progressing the the next level with this song. (Pun intended) *bricked* progressive is really like one of the proof that Kalafina can sing in different types of music.

And so, Lacrimosa. Honestly, this song was my first Kalafina song and I used to dislike it. xDDDD;; However, after few listening (after I liked Kalafina, of course), I started to like this song. It’s very powerful and EPIC. Yet, it has a very sad lyrics. “The phantom carriage parts the darkness/And goes toward where the light is/The trap known as dreams/Lures us toward the flames”.

AHH, this fast?!?!?! I have a dream. The last song of the album. A farewell song of the album. I mean it. this song gives me a farewell aura. You know?? Like the last song in a concert. You feel like crying throughout the whole song. Very touching.. *weeping*

Overall, Red Moon is like a step to the next stage for Kalafina. Their first album, Seventh Heaven, was heavily influenced with Kara no Kyoukai, with 7 of 14 songs were the theme songs for Kara no Kyoukai. In Red Moon, Yuki Kajiura explores more of the ability of the girls. Kajiura also manages to balance the vocal portion of each girl. In Seventh Heaven, Wakana was really the lead vocal, having so many songs with her as the main vocal. Red Moon, however, is very balanced. We can finally have Keiko as lead vocal in TETOTETOMETOME with Wakana and Hikaru as a backing vocals. If there’s some weak point of this album, it doesn’t have a song that could match Mata Kaze ga Tsuyoku Natta in the terms of being fast and fierce. But nevertheless, Red Moon is a very enjoyable and great album to listen to.

The phantom carriage parts the darkness
And goes toward where the light is
The trap known as dreams
Lures us toward the flames

Hoo… I didn’t know that your review skill is quite good *runs~*

I like this album XD its far superior than Seventh Heaven IMO. With the titular song as the most favorite (of course). Hikari no Senritsu is great too, but its BADLY misplaced =_= (I always rearrange the track whenever listened to it).

Also, red dresses are awesome 8D~~

Waiiii, first of all, thanks to Kaik (k intended :P) *bricked* to visit my oblivious blog :3

yeah, exactly what you said, placing Hikari no Senritsu RIGHT AFTER red moon is a big mistake. They could have placed it after STORIA OF LOVE XD~ *rolls*

    nice review. =3

And I could agree with the wordings that you used on all of the songs. To be honest, I usually skip intermezzo because it usually ruinsmy mood haha! XDDDD

@craxia>sorry my blogging spirit is kinda in a hiatus but I’m planning to do my own version of “Red Moon” review this weekend. I was a bit busy with work so I wasn’t able to post that much — even in the I’ve Sound forum.

    @fred ohhh no wonder :3

I’m actually writing the review for LINKAGE… but I guess it’s harder than Red Moon (._.)

well, i’m not crazy about linkage… unlike with savia haha
of all the songs, i just like succession (which only span for around 2 minutes…), CLIMAX, and the titular track…
high hopes for eiko shimamiya’s perfect world though 😀

Else, this song doesn’t stand up after the EPIC red moon.

for me hikari senritsu is better than red moon.
bring back old memories, this song remind me with sweet memories

u know 1st time i heard this album, red moon as the opening song, make me feel a little disappoint with this album
    7th heaven it’s better!!!!

but after many many times herd it, i think i start to love this album and hikari’s voice than keiko and wakana. (I always dislike hikari, i hate all about her. wakana is the best!!!!) lol

(Don’t ask why I’m commenting so late. XD)

“intermezzo” lyrics are really… bizarre. Lots of paradoxes (*cough*sadfacedharlequin*cough*); even the title itself is a contradiction. But then again, it’s supposed to be an intermezzo for the album. =D If you take out all the previously released a-sides, “intermezzo” is technically the second last new track, so I don’t agree with its placement right on the middle of the second half of Red Moon. It should have been #7.

SPOILER “you already know this anyways” ALERT:

The lyrics also mention something about eating sweets/candy during the comedy’s intermission. And a waltz in the penultimate line. Truly strange stuff. I would have posted my own nonsensical summary, but that’s too much.

  18. May 7, 2010 at 10:40 PM

Wow, michelle I don’t mind if you post your summary !!! :3
